Myspace Cleanup Community Project
We get asked all the time from many incredulous users of those companies we've profiled... "WHY DON'T THEY LIST MYSPACE!!!" You know, as if the absence of listing Myspace somehow justifies in the individual's mind using a company that turns a blind eye towards child rape advocacy being allowed on the servers of their favorite company. Well, there's a very good reason we don't list Myspace...
They are not a Corporate Sex Offender. Why? Because they give a damn about pedophiles and registered sex offenders using their services. The CSO project isn't asking for companies to somehow make themselves pedophile free in perpetuity, it's asking them to enforce their TOS when they find pedophiles or registered sex offenders on their service. That's all. It's a very simple request. Myspace complies and has a strict and solid no-predator, no-pedophile policy.
To that end, we decided to put their resolve to the test and to see how many registered sex offenders we could find on Myspace. We internally figured we'd find oh... around 50. Instead, our efforts have found over 3,000 registered sex offenders on Myspace in only a few months. We call this project the "Clean up your Myspace backyard" community effort. CSO volunteers have spear-headed this project by state... however, there are a lot of registered sex offenders out there and we've not yet even come close to checking half of those currently registered in the United States.
Myspace, rather than try to ignore us or tell us that they don't have the manpower or state that they can't use our work has instead embraced the effort. Why? They don't want RSO's on their social networking website as much, if not more, than you do. We even have an official protocol and email address designed for us on how to report these offenders to Myspace themselves. Rather than find excuses to not take care of the problem like some of the companies we've profiled, they've actually taken the extra step to make sure that taking care of the problem is as easy as possible.
Still, there's a lot of RSO's out there. We've found over 3,000 of them thus far, but we know that with more volunteers combing the rest of the states in an organized fashion, we can find more. You can help by joining us in our forum volunteer center and going to the "Clean up your Myspace backyard" effort center, reading up on how things work and pitching in.
As part of the effort, volunteers often also take additional steps. Those RSO's that have internet restrictions are reported to either their probationary officer or those in charge of maintaining the registry itself. As well, volunteers also make the habit of sending a pre-formatted message to those individuals on the friends list of said registered sex offender. Here are some responses of Myspace users who learned that one of their "friends" had a dark secret.
Not all responses are positive of course, as there are plenty of stupid people online. Here's an example...
Well, we haven't been "suited for slander" but we have definitely seen a few responses like the above. Some people don't want to know or have deluded themselves in general. However, if even 20% of those contacted have learned something which helps them protect themselves, the job is worth doing. Of course, the best message to receive is...
Companies that wish to delete online predators and child-rape activists often don't have the manpower to really make a dent in the problem, however we do and we are committed to helping responsible companies that wish to remove RSO's and pedophiles from their services. It is not enough to merely condemn companies and expect them to solve all of their own problems. For those companies that do give a damn, we will create community efforts to make sure they have the help they need.

Thank you for the e-mail. I appreciate it. How did you know he was on my account?
Thank you for your message about *name removed*. Unfortunately, I was NOT aware of any of this information and was deeply disturbed by it. *name removed* is a friend of a friend and we (friends) have had a discussion about it since many of us did not know about this.
Again, thank you. It is a relief to know that there is someone out there keeping the myspace community safe and alert. Your efforts are greatly appreciated. I think postive things like this should be praised by the media.
Thank you,
